Explore Upper Thurne

Wilderness waterway trails

The Upper Thurne is certainly off the beaten track for most day trippers.  The historic Potter Heigham bridge limits boat traffic into the Upper Thurne. Being based on the quiet side of the bridge means we enjoy low waterway traffic. There are stunning views across acres of marshy wildness offering an abundance of bird and wildlife. The vast horizons and big skies are broken by golden waves of reed banks gently swaying the breeze. You really feel a millions miles away, encased in nature.

What’s so special about this day boat? Our electric propulsion system quietly and unobtrusively cruises the waterways so you can absorb your surroundings: listening to the sound of the water whilst gently gliding through tranquil and serene settings. The experience is at a relaxed pace; time slows down and nature takes the lead.

We have selected the following waterway routes for your Upper Thurne experience. Each booking you have ample time to slowly cruise to one of the destinations below.

Horsey National Trust site

Iconic Horsey Windpump National Trust site is accessed via Horsey Staithe. Facilities include the National Trust cafe, toilet block, sensory wildlife garden and benches and access up the windpump. Short walk to Nelson Head public house and restaurant.

There is a mooring charge at Horsey Staithe.

Potter Heigham River village

With a choice of cafes, fish & chips shops and a Grill Tavern Potter Heigham is a great place to river watch. There are an eclectic mix of riverside bungalows on the approach waterway to the village centre. Moorings are opposite a large public green with bench seating, public toilets and footpath walks.

Martham Broad Nature Reserve

Picnic on the pristine waters of Martham Broad, with big skies and long wild views across the vast nature reserve. Mud weight to enjoy a stationary pause and breathe in the surrounding or stop off at one of the river bank mooring points. Book a reservation at the Pleasureboat Inn for your return.
